Building Data Warehouses: A 15-year Journey to Enterprise-wide Interoperability

UT Southwestern Medical Center Selected as 2017 HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award Recipient

CHICAGO (January 10, 2018) – The story of UT Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) is one of tremendous growth and progress. As early adopters of healthcare technology, UT Southwestern has embraced the benefits that automation and data analytics bring to clinical medicine, while always keeping their goal of improved patient outcomes front-of-mind.

The organization’s Health System Information Resources (HSIR) department understands that automation and data analytics is only as good as the quality of the data. Their focus on continuous improvement over the last 15 years led to the adoption of Agile methodologies combined with automated testing, which ensures both efficient delivery of technology solutions and high-quality data for decision-making.

Health System Information Resources (HSIR): The Journey to Enterprise-wide Interoperable Data

UTSW’s Health System Information Resources (HSIR) team began implementing health information and technology systems as early as 1984, with early efforts for a data warehouse beginning in 2003. Over the years, the data warehouse has grown to include data from over 33 systems including clinical, operational and academic data that allows UTSW to easily access information about everything from patient satisfaction factors to detecting gaps in care across a specific patient population.

“The electronic medical record combined with our team-based care delivery models are the foundations for not only our commitment to patient safety and quality of care, but also the driver for the continuous improvements to transform our health system moving forward," said Suresh Gunasekaran, Vice President of Health System Operations at UT Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW). Access to vast amounts of clean interoperable data enables fast and reliable data-driven decision making, and helps drive the organization’s goal of being a ‘learning health system’.
